Which Kipling Backpacks Are Sustainable?

Every day, we work towards creating our iconic products according to more eco-conscious principles, lowering our environmental impact and becoming a more sustainable bag brand. Here, we will take a closer look at some of our sustainable backpacks and ethical backpacks. High on style and utility, but low on impact, these backpacks are just another way we’re pursuing our commitment to sustainability.

About our sustainable backpacks – and beyond

At Kipling, one of the most significant ways that we’re working on our commitment to sustainability is by using recycled materials in our backpacks and other bags. Two of the main recycled materials we use to create our backpacks are recycled nylon and recycled polyester.

  • Recycled nylon

    • Recycled nylon is made by collecting and processing post-consumer waste, such as discarded fishing nets, carpets, and industrial plastic waste, and turning it into a high-quality nylon fiber.
  • Recycled polyester

    • Recycled polyester is made by collecting and processing post-consumer waste, such as plastic bottles, packaging, and textile waste, and turning it into a high-quality polyester fiber.

The process of creating both of these durable recycled fabrics reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and helps to conserve non-renewable resources by reusing existing materials. Despite being recycled, the resulting fabrics have the same properties as those made from virgin fibers, meaning quality and durability, but with lower environmental impact.

In addition to using recycled materials, we also have implemented water-saving technologies in our dying process. We are also working to reduce our carbon footprint by using solar power to power many of our factories. By rethinking our approach to design and the materials we use, we are making considerable strides towards becoming a more sustainable bag brand.

Some highlights of our progress towards sustainability

  • Our prints use 20% less water when printed on our new 38% recycled polyester fabric

  • 2/3 of Kipling's employees get to work by bike, train, or electric scooter
